Warpo is like a brother to me.
I learned comedy throw away magic, and novelty magic from Warpo. We have a long history going back many years, somewhere in the very early 90's. At the time I was working at Magic Masters (a high end magic shop targeting doctor and lawyer types).
Warpo had a Pitch Joint down in The French Market in New Orleans, and I had stumbled upon him there, doing one of his world famous Svengali Pitches.
One of the most valuable things he taught me about comedy, is that it's much more appealing if the joke is on the performer. If you've seen my show you know I've run with that.
He has a long, successful, legendary, history as a pitchman. His teacher was Sir David Walker.
Almost everyone I've talked to in the business has told me he's the best Svengali Pitchman alive and I've never seen any one as good as him at it, and I've seen many around the world on my work trips.
When Warpo went to the street, it fit him like a glove. So much so, that it made us all wonder why he never did it before.
He is also a French Quarter Icon, and has been since he arrived in New Orleans many years ago at the New Orleans Worlds Fair.
I think one of the things that made us so close, is that coming up all those years in the New Orleans magic community, we were the only Throw Away Magicians around. We would go to meetings and be bombarded with flawless knuckle busting magicians and we were just novelty comedy magic kinda of guys.
Once at a Magic meeting in a restaurant I saw a bunch of the best card magicians in the country doing card magic for the waitstaff, but when asked later who they thought was the best magician, they all said it was Warpo, and we all laughed, because all he used that night was a Svengali Deck.
Warpo is the master at presentation, no question.
Which brings us to, he is also a stand up comedian, prepared to go up on stage and do a full set without magic...something that would terrify most magicians.
Some of the best times of my life were working in his magic shop in the French Quarter. I met quite a few celebrities of magic there, and felt like I was a part of a family, he is famous for surrounding himself with good people, so with that I feel blessed to have been able to run in his circle.
I love his show because it is a Sidewalk Show, don’t get me wrong, I love all street shows big or small, if they are good, but my preference is the sidewalk and Warpo's got one of the best.
I’ll be writing more about Warpo later.
Your Pal.
