How Do Street Performers Build Crowds?
By using their Character to cast a net. Once you know the Character, you are going to be using to present your show, crowd building will be the easiest part of your show. Because it only takes two things to build a crowd, Character and confidence.
The idea, is to throw your Character out there as far as you can all over the sidewalk for everyone to see, and the people who like your Character will stop, and those who don't, will keep walking, which is great, because you don’t want those people hanging around trying to fowl up your show or trying to convince people to leave.
You want the people who like your character, they are the ones who will stay till the end, and are going to give you the energy you need to give a better show, and the energy that attracts more people.
The trick is to be confident that the show is going to happen, uncaring whether it does or not. In fact even if it doesn't, your Character goes on having fun anyway. The better your Character is, the larger the amount of people you will be able to stop.
If you fish around on the my new Sidewalk Performer substack site you will see this subject come up again and again.
