This is the scariest thing in the business, and everyone you know, is against it.
My friend "Toot" told me years ago he saw Jeff Sheridan working New York and he watched him over and over on breaks from his real job..til one day Toot decided that’s what he was gonna do with his life, the problem was he knew very little magic. What did he do?
He went home to his roommate and told em the situation. He suggested to the room mate that he should sponsor him for a few months....support him. And after Toot got on his feet he would support his roommate for awhile. Fortunately for Toot the roommate agreed. So Toot worked 8-16 hrs a day to learn. He ate, breathed, and crapped, street performing. He was in a hurry, because he knew his three months were gonna fly by. He did it, and the rest is history.
You're gonna need time to go to school (the school of street performing) and you're gonna need 100% focus to save time.
Will everything work out? Nope. Will your wife and family get angry. Yep, they already do. Will she leave you? In this country the odds are good she will, so be careful, Don't take her for granted and assume everything is fine, time to pay attention to your marriage. Make sure she feels secure and prove to her that she is.
People will tell you they're supportive and they aren’t, Why? Not because they are bad people, it's because they know you, they know you're an artist and you got problems.
Face it, learn to embrace it, and things will go a lot smoother. Your not normal, you're here reading this! Your smart, too smart that’s the problem. Wake up! This is a bad thing! You'd be better off if you could be content working in a brain dead 9 to 5 job that pays.
When should you take this time off and make the leap? As soon as possible, the key is to not put it off. I would suggest you start, just before the beginning of the season, which are the summer months. Bigger and better hats. Three months might not be long enough it took me almost a year. And you might want to practice throughout the winter to be ready for the summer.
Why so long?
1.You need to design a show for the street that pays.
2.You need street/stage time under your belt
3.You need to know how to find pitches that suit your show.
4. You have to spend time engulfing yourself in busking books, busking dvds, and being taught by experienced workers if you can find any.
I’ve heard some great success stories from a bunch of guys over the years and they're out there. You know who they are and you can be one of them if you commit to it as much as they did. The biggest thing is to just start going out there. If you make the leap don't panic, you're going to be making money, that's the point! My friend Dante told me this just before I went to Europe the first time, and I was terrified, but this calmed me down and it turned out to be true.
